How do you get rid of the pesky caterpillars that form into the gypsy moths?

Saturday, November 28th, 2009
I live in a rural area, with fields, trees, awful place…

But anyway, we have quite a lot of nice plants, shrubs, etc., that we hand-planted ourselves, and these stupid gypsy moth caterpillars are on everything, the sides of the house, and eating all of our plants.

We know of sprays (they get costly), and we know of using duct tape vaseline on trees to kill or prevent them from making their nests.

What else helps? Any at-home solutions or mixtures or basic techniques to get rid of them? I live in North East PA, if that helps to know about climate/topography.

How should I transition my clay paver walkway to my driveway?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009
I am installing a clay paver walkway from my front porch to the driveway. I am using the standard dry method with a compacted stone base and screeding overtop. The topography is such that making the walkway flush with the driveway would create too steep a slope, so I plan on having the walkway end about one paver’s depth higher than the asphalt. Essentially, there will be a small step up to the walkway when entering it from the driveway. My question is, how do I keep the step from moving. I can’t install the plastic edging, so I thought I might have to use mortar on the last course, kind of like a retaining wall. Any hints on how to do this?

Is the dark, hard soil in crawl space called clay? Is it always damp?

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009
We’ve put a contract on a house. But we just found the soil in crawl space is dark and hard, not like the sand in our friends’ crawl spaces. Does it mean the topography of this house is lower? Does this kind of soil tend to be damp all the time? I could feel some moisture down the crawl space. Would you buy a house with this kind of soil in the crawl space? Thanks for your expertise!!!

Where are Gophers Most Often found in the United States?

Monday, October 27th, 2008
They do not seem to be that common in the Midatlantic States, from what I can tell. Are there States out west where they are more common? To what types of areas are they attracted–soil, topography etc. There is not much information on the gopher through conventional search. Thanks.
I see we are getting off to a good start with the nitwit club. Is the ground a State? Must be that 51st one that I didn’t hear about yet.
