question about climate in the sahara and amazon?

why is it that even if the sahara (on africa) and the amazon (on the americas) lie on roughly the same equatorial plane, they have vastly different climates, topography, almost in contrast to each other? please explain.
when i said lying on the same tropical plane, i mean that they are both between 23.5 degrees north (tropic of cancer) and 23.5 degrees south (tropic of capricorn)… also, i can include the asian rainforests in the question…
