If there is any software out there (preferably downloadable) that could help me make a good 3D or 2D map (it’s a must that I be able to map out the topography). It doesn’t need to be detailed (houses could be labeled dots, etc) but I would appreciate it being accurate, being able to add a legend, change elevation and make hills/mountains, indicate forested areas, etc. I’m an artist and I can improvise, but I would really appreciate any of those features.
Thank you!
P.S. I have Adobe Illustrator CS3 and Adobe Photoshop CS3 already–it’s not quite the type of software I want for this. What I mean is a software that I can click and drag to raise or lower elevation, add points, show forestation, etc. It doesn’t need to be pretty or complex–it’s just for my personal use in keeping the book accurate.

Persuasive Letter

Dear Dad,
To state that you have simply helped me would be a display of utter ignorance. Time and time again, both my academic and non-academic endeavors have been strongly supported by you. Where would I be without your guidance? However, there is one thing I must acquire for me to launch into even higher skies of success – a book collection.
Before anything else is said, I must clarify what this book collection is about. It is not a hackneyed romance series. It is not a set of obscure, esoteric textbooks that will collect an inch of dust over time. And it is not a hyped collection whose price tag would make even Bill Gates panic. Instead, my book collection will consist of three parts: an assortment of math reference books, noteworthy pieces of literature, and tools such as a dictionary or thesaurus.
Returning to where I left off, my request has been met with several understandable objections, but I will address them and show that there is actually little to worry about.
First, and foremost, you have pointed out that “many book collections are just for collecting”, where the owners collect books just to, well, own them. I must admit that this argument is true; if the collection is for showing but not using, then one should not be collecting in the first place. Unlike others, though, my collection will actually have a use as a reference source. If I need to check for spelling or formulas, I would refer to the math books and the dictionary. The noteworthy pieces of literature will also be useful as a source for quotes, thoughts, and arguments. Thus, there is no issue of having no use for my collection.
In addition, libraries, as you have argued, are a viable alternative, since they contain an endless plethora of books that are easily accessible. Nevertheless, libraries are unable to fulfill for my needs. I cannot write in the books without risking penalty, and, if I require them for a long period of time, the limited checkout time would simply not do. Another point I would like to make is how the library’s convenience can become extraordinarily inconvenient; one book had a whopping 84 holds on it! Would you like to join the waiting list?
Finally, you are worried that the books will quickly become outdated. However, their becoming obsolete is by no means bad; like my ancient Gameboy Color, it may illustrate the thoughts and concepts of that age. In fact, most of my books will be almost unaffected by time; it is highly unlikely for any math book to become outdated in five, ten, or even 50 years.
Thus, with the fog of objections out of our view, we can clearly see that I will flourish with these books. Imagine when I would have something to guide me at all times. Imagine how I will grow more resourceful and intelligent. Imagine how far they will carry me to the horizon and far beyond that.
Sincerely,
Larry

Good as it is to inherit a library, it is better to collect one.
~Augustine Birrell, Obiter Dicta, Book Buying
A book reads the better which is our own, and has been so long known to us, that we know the topography of its blots, and dog’s ears, and can trace the dirt in it to having read it at tea with buttered muffins.

Inked ribbon - a slash of silver winked
beneath the arch-browed brick…
I pulled over, quick - just past the bridge.
Next Sunday, set out from where I’d left off - another voyage
down that towpath: about six miles - after calling a halt and tracking back.
Though you could not get lost, I noted landmarks: a stone cottage by a lock:
an aqueduct; the walking-time between every outpost pub;
discovered plain silence - mounted astride an oak scrub
under drizzle by an empty hen-coop.
Then, after following the cut along a hugh-banked loop,
surprised twenty minutes later when a tunnel,
spooling in the black one, forced me to surface from an unrecognized angle
on a stretch of suburban road that I could name.
After several Sundays, I’d worked out our likely finale before it came -
fences closing in along the back of terraces,
past cobbled loading-wharves and shored-up warehouses:
the last leg terminated in a derelict canal basin
I’d been navigated back to within
a short bus-ride from where i live;
released from the countryside, once more a native,
where, above this oily maze of waterways, railway bridges criss-crossed
long distances- rigged in a rusty blue-grey and iron-latticed.
In fact, the canal’s urban ending - I liked that decaying format best.
But just as I’d got off pat this new topography, a quest
felt ended - all behind-the-scenes concealments charted,or mentally, at least,
connected up. I went home finally to consult a map.
Since when - by me - the canal’s not been visited. Never made another trip.
